Introduction to NatureWorks
Three Goals of NatureWorks
NatureWorks and Avalon K-12 School
NatureWorks is designed to link project-based learning that is not only rigorous, but also relevant to our students. The program aligns with the Common Core State Standards and inquiry development, while also fostering digital literacy and citizenship. With Avalon K-12 as a launch platform, NatureWorks will utilize the uniqueness of Catalina Island and link to Avalon's WASC Action Plan critical learner needs (2015-21), the Avalon K-12 Schoolwide Learner Outcomes, and Webb's Depth of Knowledge levels (1-4). Students will also be provided opportunities to practice collaboration activities, formative assessment strategies, and "productive struggle" with complex text and problems.
Most importantly, however, NatureWorks provides an opportunity for genuine interpretation. According to the National Association of Interpretation (2007), "Interpretation is a mission-based communication process that forges emotional and intellectual connections between the interests of the audience and the meanings inherent in the resource" (Certified Interpretive Guide, 2010, p. 8). The mission is simple: provoke students to become responsible stewards of this land through a balance of conservation, education and recreation. We all have an innate interest in nature, and we are fortunate to have the Catalina Island Conservancy as an invaluable resource.
